Nowadays, there is a heated debate about whether university education should be free or not. Those who argue that it should be free believe that education is a basic human right and should not be a privilege for only the wealthy. Additionally, they argue that by making education free, everyone can have equal access to knowledge and thus be able to contribute more to society. On the other hand, opponents of free university education argue that it would be too expensive for the government to provide and would lead to lower quality education. Moreover, they argue that individuals should take responsibility for their own education and investing in oneself is an investment for the future.
In my opinion, while free university education may seem like an attractive option, it is not sustainable in the long run. The government already has to allocate funds towards healthcare, infrastructure, and national defense, and adding free university education would put more strain on the government budget. Furthermore, it is important for individuals to take responsibility for their own education and invest in themselves. By paying for their own education, individuals are more likely to take it seriously and put in more effort to succeed. In conclusion, while the concept of free university education may be appealing, it is not practical in the current economic climate.
Should Universities Allow Students to Use Mobile Phones in Class?
With the rapid development of mobile technology, the use of mobile phones among college students has become increasingly common. Some students argue that they should be allowed to use their mobile phones in class for academic purposes and emergencies; however, others claim that it is a major distraction and disrupts the learning environment. In my opinion, universities should ban the use of mobile phones in class, with exceptions made for emergency situations.
On one hand, using mobile phones in class has its advantages.
Firstly, smartphones can be used as a tool for learning. With internet access, students can look up relevant information, download course materials and access educational apps. For example, watching a video on YouTube can facilitate understanding of complex topics. Secondly, it is important to acknowledge that mobile phones can also play a vital role in emergency situations. If a student needs to call for medical assistance or family member in case of an emergency, having a phone could be critical.
On the other hand, using mobile phones in class can be a major distraction.
Firstly, notifications from social media apps and messaging apps can take students’ attention and make them lose focus on their studies. A study from the University of California found that students who use their phones in class score lower grades than those who do not. Secondly, using mobile phones can also be a source of disruption for other students and the professor. Not only can it be loud and disturbing, but other students may also be tempted to use their phones if they see their peers doing so.
Therefore, universities should ban the use of mobile phones in class, with exceptions made for emergencies.
In order to create an effective learning environment, universities should take measures to minimize potential distractions during classes. The alternative for academic purposes could be to provide laptops or tablets for students to use in class, which can also help them develop digital literacy skills. However, exceptions should be made for situations in which students need to contact a family member or call for an emergency. In these instances, professors could ask students to use a shared class phone or provide their personal phone numbers.
